This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to work in an animal technology facility.

The unit applies to individuals who work under strict supervision as junior or assistant level animal technicians, working with and caring for animals used within an animal technology environment for scientific purposes.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Identify the reasons for implementing euthanasia and humane killing in an animal laboratory and research context 
Identify appropriate process and species-specific approved methods for euthanasia or humane killing used in the facility 
Observe or assist with approved animal euthanasia or humane killing 
Identify situations or incidents related to animal technology work that may contribute to mental health and wellbeing, including compassion fatigue 
Anticipate, recognise and respond to signs indicating mental health issues, including compassion fatigue, in self and others 
Identify coping strategies and tools to maintain mental health issues 
Contribute to team strategies to address challenges relating to animal technology work 
Perform job-specific work practices according to organisational and regulatory health and safety and environmental requirements 
Comply with workplace security procedures 
Communicate clearly and seek assistance from the appropriate person to improve performance and provide guidance 
Identify and report unusual activity and breaches in compliance
